Finally!
At less than three feet tall, our two year old navel orange tree set fruit, which absolutely delighted us.
Of all the fruit trees we planted, the orange has been the most finicky and frustrat
We started out with seven little oranges, but a mishap with the neighbor's sprinkler system resulted in two of them splitting.
My concern that we had no rain to speak of cost us another one. Then we actually had some rain, which cost us another. That left us with a bumper crop of three beautiful navel oranges.
(I hope things improve as the tree grows.)
Just the other day my husband and I sat at our heirloom kitchen table and enjoyed our first taste. It was a little tough to peel, but springy with the promise of juice.
The taste was sweet with just the hint of a tang. In short, delicious.
There is something about the fact that we grew them ourselves makes them so much the sweeter.
