Saturday Farmer's Market - A Little Bit of Mom's Handiwork

Created by Heather at Capricious Reader, and now hosted by Chris at Stuff as Dreams are Made on.

The rain has continued off and on for the past two weeks. I haven't done much at all outside, but Mother Nature has been hard at work!

I thought I'd just post a few pictures of her handiwork:

When Spring hits my yard it explodes in yellow, like sun escaping from beneath the earth.

First comes the wild yellow clover.

(Which is nearly impossible to eradicate. I know. I've been beaten.)

The Daffodils then make their way through, to be followed shortly by the California Poppies.

Unfortunately, I can only show it all to you in pieces.

Plums!

Little plums!

Last year's crop was absolutely delicious, and we are looking forward to this year.

Can you guess what these are?

Pluots!

If you have never tried one, I definitely recommend that you do.

We planted these trees the same year as the plums but this is the first year they set fruit.

When we started we were told not to expect fruit until about the fifth summer after we planted.

This is only the third so we are still well ahead of schedule.

We have salad!

Alright, it's not quite salad yet.

But soon these will be nice leafy heads of lettuce.

This Iris was a gift from my son.

This silly Azalea has doubled in size - horizontally - but it is exactly the same height it was when I planted it.

Is there a ground cover cultivar of azalea?

The Japanese Maple is in full leaf.

The color is actually a deep crimson.

I tried five different times, and no matter what I did, the color washed out.

Pieris Japonica or 'Lily of the Valley' plant.

I was looking forward to my yellow and purple Iris blooming together.

It would have been beautiful.

I was disappointed, however, the purple ones were completely finished blooming before these started.

Sigh.

 Ahh! Lilac!

What you can't see in this picture is that this bush is related to Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree.

It has three small blooms on top and a bunch of leaves, but most of the rest of it is naked.

Should I wrap it in one of those fake bushes from QVC that you use to hide your AC unit?

You know, to save its self esteem?

  1. Your plants should all have good self-esteem; they're beautiful, especially to the eye of one whose landscape is still gray and white except for some crocus.

    1. Thank you so much. I know most of the country has had a rough winter, including my family in PA, while my garden has had probably its best winter ever. But once summer hits I expect a struggle. Even the rain we've had the past few weeks Isn't enough to make up for the past fifteen years of drought, and this summer I'll be fighting to keep everything alive.

I'll be counting on you to keep my spirits up with your lovely garden. Soon! Honest!
